Magoon Creek

Magoon Creek is a Filer Township Natural Area just off Red Apple Road and consists of 97 acres and 2,300 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline. The Magoon Creek Natural Area purchase was finalized in December of 1982 being made possible by a group of dedicated township residents. It was developed in 1983 with money from the Natural Resources Trust Fund and the cooperation of a number of agencies.

This Natural Area with its dunes, rolling hills and valleys offer hiking trails and a picnic area with tables and grills. Various kinds of trees and shrubs are havens for wildlife such as deer and turkey. A stroll along the many paths is a day well spent.

Considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Lakes dunes comprise the world’s most extensive freshwater assembly of dunes. The dunes of Magoon Creek Natural Area are fragile. The township mission is to allow the natural progression of dune development.

Magoon Creek affords a miniature study of a complete flood plain in one day’s expedition-the eco systems of a great lake shoreline, creek plant and wildlife, the contrast between rich, moist woods and open sandy meadow each supporting its own unit of wildlife yet dependent and co- existent with one another. This Natural Area with its dunes, rolling hills and valleys offer hiking trails and a picnic area with tables and grills. Various kinds of trees and shrubs are havens for wildlife such as deer and turkey. A stroll along the many paths is a day well spent.

Reminder: Magoon Creek Park closes shortly after sunset. No overnight camping or parking. Vehicles will be locked in overnight or towed away by owner’s expense.

Sundling Park

Sundling Park is a 66-foot-wide strip west of Red Apple Road, North of Magoon Creek, where a trail to the beach can be found. A small parking area off Red Apple Road is available. A trail through the park and down the dune ends at the water’s edge.
